What is GEO? AI SEO, GEO and AEO explained for Singapore businesses
What GEO, AEO and AI SEO mean, how Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT pick the pages they quote, and what you can control on your own site.
What do GEO, AEO and AI SEO mean?
They are three industry names for one job: helping AI search tools find your pages, understand them and quote them accurately in the answers they write. None of them is a standard or a separate system, and Google itself treats the work as SEO[1].
- GEO (generative engine optimisation) covers AI search tools that write an answer and link their sources: Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity.
- AEO (answer engine optimisation) focuses on answers: each section’s first sentence answers a real question on its own, so an assistant can quote it.
- AI SEO is the broadest label: usually the same as GEO, sometimes also doing SEO work with AI tools.
Whatever the name, the aim is a site that is easy to fetch, easy to read and consistent in its facts. No engine guarantees a quote: what you control is whether your site is eligible and clear when it looks.
This guide covers the website. For AI readiness across the whole business, see the Be AI Ready Guide.
GEO vs SEO: what’s actually different?
Less than the names suggest: Google says optimising for its generative AI features is still SEO. Those features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems and need no special files, markup or schema[1].
What changes is where you appear and how pages are picked. An AI answer can quote several pages at once, so being the clearest source matters as much as position. And ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity use their own crawlers, so each one has to be let in.
| Aspect | Classic SEO | GEO (AI search) |
|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | A ranked list of links | Inside the AI’s answer, as a quoted or linked source |
| What picks the page | Google’s ranking and quality systems | For Google, the same systems [1]. ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity use their own crawlers and indexes |
| How a page is found | A search for the words typed | Several related searches run at once, called query fan-out [1] |
| Technical basics | Crawlable, indexed, fast | The same, plus access for each AI search crawler [2] |
| Content that works | Helpful, first-hand, clearly structured | The same, with each section answering its question first |
| Special files or markup | None required | None required by Google: no llms.txt and no special AI schema [1] |
| How to measure | Search Console and Google Analytics | Search Console’s Generative AI report [1], ChatGPT visits in Google Analytics [3], monthly manual checks |
So you don’t need two strategies: the work that helps an AI assistant also makes a page clearer for people and stronger in ordinary search.
How do AI assistants find the pages they quote?
Most AI search tools do not answer from memory alone: they search an index of web pages, read the best results and write an answer that links its sources. Google calls this retrieval-augmented generation, or grounding, and picks those pages with its core Search ranking systems[1].
Crawl
A crawler fetches your page, if robots.txt and the firewall allow it.
Index
The page is stored in the engine’s index.
Retrieve
A question triggers several related searches; the best pages are read.
Answer
The model writes a reply and links the pages it relied on.
Google calls this “query fan-out”: several related searches run at once[1], so a page that clearly answers one specific question is easier to retrieve.
Each engine uses its own crawler and index, so a site has to be open to each one:
| AI search tool | Reads pages through | Your site needs to be |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Googlebot, Google’s index | Indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search [1] |
| ChatGPT search | OAI-SearchBot | Not blocked in robots.txt or by the firewall [2] |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bingbot, Bing’s index | Indexed by Bing; submit in Bing Webmaster Tools |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot | Not blocked in robots.txt or by the firewall |
| Claude | Claude-SearchBot | Not blocked in robots.txt or by the firewall |
Sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers; GPTBot, OpenAI’s training crawler, is controlled separately[2]. You can allow search and still opt out of training.
What is structured data (schema markup), and does it help?
Structured data (schema markup) is a standard description of a page in its code: the business, service, price and author[6]. It helps machines understand a page, but it is not a shortcut to AI citations.
- Google says it is not required for its AI features but is still a good idea as part of SEO[1], and it makes pages eligible for rich results[6].
- Microsoft Bing has said schema markup helps its language models, including Copilot, understand web content[4].
- OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic have not documented how they use it.
Our view: add Organization, Service and Breadcrumb markup that states exactly what the page already says. It costs little, and Bing says it helps its models understand pages[4], though there is no good evidence yet that it lifts AI citations on its own. See how structured data works, in plain terms.
The AI-ready checklist: eight things to check on your site
These eight checks cover access, speed, structure and trust, starting with access. Most take a few minutes to check.
Your robots.txt, security plugin and CDN firewall let Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and the other search crawlers in. A blanket bot block, often a security plugin or CDN default, stops a page being read at all. Cloudflare has blocked AI crawlers by default on new domains since July 2025, so it is one of the first things we check on a site we take over.
Check itOpen yoursite.sg/robots.txt and look for “Disallow: /” under any of those names.
A page has to be in Google’s index, and eligible to show with a snippet, before Google’s AI features can use it [1]. The same logic applies to Bing and Copilot.
Check itIn Google Search Console, open Pages and check the indexed count against your real page count.
Google’s Core Web Vitals thresholds are LCP under 2.5 s, INP under 200 ms and CLS under 0.1, measured on real visits [5]. Slow pages are worse for people and harder to fetch in full.
Check itRun your homepage and one service page through PageSpeed Insights, mobile tab.
One page per service or product, each with a plain-English definition, price, who it’s for and a short FAQ. A single “Services” page listing everything gives no page a clear job.
Check itList what you sell. Every line should have a URL of its own.
Under each heading, the first one or two sentences answer the question on their own; detail follows. It’s how people skim, and the part most easily quoted.
Check itRead only the first sentence under each heading. Does it answer the heading?
One H1, headings in order, real lists and tables, and text as text rather than inside images. Google says semantic HTML need not be perfect, but it helps screen readers and other tools parse a page [1].
Check itCheck that prices, hours and phone numbers can be selected as text.
Google says first-hand, non-commodity content will likely matter more than any of the other steps in its guide [1]. Real prices, timelines, named case studies and lessons from your own work are what no one else can publish.
Check itCould a competitor paste this paragraph onto their site unchanged? If yes, rewrite it.
Anything unticked is where to start. Items 1 and 2 come first: nothing else counts if a page cannot be reached or indexed.
What can you skip?
Several popular “AI optimisation” tactics are not supported by how Google Search works, according to Google’s own guidance[1].
- You may hear
You need an llms.txt file.
What the guidance saysGoogle Search does not use llms.txt, and Google says keeping one for other systems is fine [1]. It is not a priority.
- You may hear
Break content into tiny chunks for AI.
What the guidance saysGoogle says its systems understand pages with several topics and there is no ideal page length [1]. Write for the reader.
- You may hear
Rewrite every page in a special “AI style”.
What the guidance saysAI systems understand synonyms and meaning, so there is no need to chase every keyword variation [1]. Clear writing is the style.
- You may hear
Get mentioned everywhere, by any means.
What the guidance saysGoogle warns that seeking inauthentic mentions is less helpful than it seems, and its spam systems apply to AI features too [1].
- You may hear
Schema markup is the secret to AI answers.
What the guidance saysStructured data is not required for Google’s AI features and there is no special AI schema [1]. It is still worth doing, for the reasons in the structured data section above.
Google also cautions against third-party tools that promise ranking success or claim access to its internal metrics[1]. The same caution applies to anyone promising a place in AI answers.
How do you measure AI search visibility?
Use the free first-party data first: Google Search Console for Google’s AI features, and Google Analytics for visits from AI assistants.
- Google Search Console has a Generative AI performance report for Google’s AI features[1] (impressions only, no clicks or queries).
- Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report showing when Copilot and Bing’s AI answers cite your pages.
- Google Analytics can show ChatGPT visits, because ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends[3].
- Manual checks: once a month, ask the main assistants your customers’ top three questions and note which sources they cite.
Where should a Singapore business start?
Start with access and facts, then structure: those steps have the widest effect for the least effort.
- Check crawler access this week.Ask whoever manages your hosting to confirm robots.txt and the firewall allow Googlebot, Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot.
- Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Both are free. Bing matters because Microsoft Copilot answers from Bing’s index.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile.Match the name, address, phone, hours and category to your website exactly.
- Ask every customer for a Google review, the same way each time.Reviews and genuine mentions on other sites (press, partners, industry lists) are how AI tools learn about you beyond your own pages. Never buy or swap them.
- Give each service its own page, with the price in S$.Singapore buyers and AI answers both look for a number. “From S$800, scoped after a free scan” is more useful than “contact us for a quote”.
- Rewrite the first sentence under every heading.Make it a direct, self-contained answer. Then add Organization, Service and Breadcrumb structured data that states the same facts.
If you would rather have the work done, AI-Ready Website Optimisation is the on-site part of GEO and AI SEO that Nerb can do, prove and hand over. We don’t sell rankings or citations, because no one can guarantee them.

GEO and AI search: questions, answered
How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?
No one can guarantee it. You control eligibility: allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and your firewall, get your pages indexed, and publish specific answers to the questions customers ask. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links, so that traffic shows in Google Analytics.
Should I block GPTBot or other AI crawlers?
Block training if you want to, but keep the search crawlers in. GPTBot, OpenAI’s training crawler, is controlled separately from OAI-SearchBot, and sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Set rules for each crawler by name rather than blocking all bots. For Google, blocking Google-Extended also keeps your site out of Gemini app answers, and Search Console’s Search generative AI setting can remove it from AI Overviews and AI Mode.
What is AEO?
AEO (answer engine optimisation) means shaping your pages so AI assistants and search features can quote a direct answer from them. In practice, the first sentence under each heading answers a real question on its own, and your facts read the same everywhere. It is the same work as GEO and good SEO, not a separate system.
Does my website platform matter for GEO?
Not much. WordPress, Shopify or a hand-built site can all meet the eight checks. What matters is readable HTML, fast loading on a phone and clear structure. Check any content that only appears after scripts run: not every crawler renders a page like a browser.
Should I pay for a GEO or AI SEO service?
Be wary of anyone who promises rankings or a place in AI answers: no one can guarantee either. On-site work you can check is different: crawler access, indexing, speed, page structure, answer-first copy and structured data, with a before-and-after record.
How long does it take to make a website AI-ready?
Crawler access and Search Console setup take a day. Restructuring service pages, answer-first copy and structured data typically take two to three weeks for a small business site, then need maintaining as the site changes.
